Why do Ohio’s voters prefer Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton? Oh wait, they don’t. If Trump can’t even take crucial Rust Belt swing states like Ohio, he’s in trouble.

On Sunday’s Face the Nation, host John Dickerson asked CBS News Elections Director Anthony Salvanto about a startling new poll. The latest poll from Battleground Tracker, a joint effort by You.Gov and CBS News, shows Hillary Clinton ahead of in Ohio 46 percent to Donald Trump’s 40 percent.

‘Well, [in] Ohio, which is so critical to Donald Trump’s fortunes, he sees it moving more towards Hillary Clinton. She’s made gains with women. She continues to do better with her Democratic base than Trump does with his Republican base. In fact, last time we talked to these folks this summer, there were some Democrats who were considering Donald Trump. They’re gone now. They’ve all gone to Hillary Clinton.’

Meanwhile, even likely voters in Iowa have the two candidates neck-in-neck at 40 percent each. That’s not good, considering that Iowa’s supposed to be in the GOP’s sweet spot. After all, this state’s a lot older and whiter than other states. Salvato points out that they’re the ones who say that “American life is changing for the worse,” and that “Donald Trump does very well with those kinds of voters.”

So, what do these poll numbers mean for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for the other swing states, John Dickerson asks? Donald Trump’s campaign won’t find any comfort in Anthony Salvanto’s answer.

‘It’s a lot of blue. A lot of Democratic blue. In fact, we started this race identifying at least 11 states that we thought could be contested or go either way. You look across that map now, and Hillary Clinton is leading. Most times outside the margin of error, in poll after poll, in state after state.’

Is there any hope for Donald Trump and his supporters? Salvanto finds his chances pretty grim.”Look,” he explains, “if you want to swing states, you’ve got to change minds.” The poll also asked non-Trump voters in Ohio what might make them vote for him instead of Hillary Clinton, and they said they’d reconsider trump if he:

Shows he’s ready to be president (19%)Apologizes to people he’s offended (17%)Explains his finances and taxes (15 %)Photo: 8/21/2016 video screengrab via Face the Nation.Oh, and the GOP’s White House hopeful also needs to:

Stop saying controversial things. (14%)Reach out to minorities. (13%)Beat Hillary Clinton in debates. (12%)Those things might happen when Hell freezes over.
