The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Feb. 15, edition that
Falconbridge says talks will resume today in Sudbury aimed at reaching a
settlement of a seven-month strike at its nickel mines. A Bloomberg News
dispatch to The Globe reports that Falconbridge says it is at "critical
point, and our priority is to reach a settlement." Canadian Auto Workers
head, Buzz Hargrove, is scheduled to join the talks tomorrow. The talks are
being held without a mediator. In a letter to union president, Rolly
Gauthier, Falconbridge said it will evaluate options to restore full
production in the "very near future" if the talks are unsuccessful. The
letter was available on Falconbridge's Web site. Falconbridge is
threatening to hire workers to replace strikers at its Ontario mines if
talks this week fail to resolve the seven-month walkout. About 1,250
production workers went on strike Aug. 1 at the company's Sudbury-area
mines. The mines are operating at 20 per cent of capacity, while the
smelter is running at 50 per cent.
