Man, you sound like you could be from Western Canada <g>.
Western US. Does that count? :-)

partly our lack of checks and balances
Now wait. A parliamentary system has checks and balances in it. Although a large chunk of power does reside with the legislature in it.

the more I learn about Jefferson, the more lucky I think you guys were
Not just Jefferson, although he did contribute a great deal. We got an amazing and wholly undeserved stroke of luck in the quality of men that showed up in Philadelphia that summer.

Now we must keep what they started.

The opinion leaders in Toronto have swallowed the national unity myth hook, line and sinker. To them for the 20 years following the PQ's first election win in Quebec, appeasement was far, far more important than good government.
Damn! Bad idea. Different parts of a large nation must accommodate each other, but there must be limits too. Somebody needs to tell them to make their minds: they are Canadians or they are not.

I remember some who believed Canada would come unglued if Quebec left and break up into numerous small countries. I doubt that. I suspect I would Quebec and Canada minus Quebec.

"Good government". And I remember criticism of that as Canada's national motto. I couldn't understand that. Would those who dislike it prefer "Canada über alles" or some other jingoistic slogan to inspire inexperienced boys to go get themselves killed for old men?
And what is wrong with "Good Government" as a goal?

Mercifully that seems to be starting to change.
Good.

Lots of people have thought about your solution to separatism -- it's been suggested many times over cheap beer at the Legion.
Mr. Lincoln's solution was hardly universally popular here when he implemented it. It became acceptable because it succeeded. Constitutionally - well, it has to be unconstitutional. If those states had thought they couldn't get back out when they went into the Union, they never would have gotten in. Lincoln used excuses of "Federal property" and "putting down an insurrection" to justify his likely illegal action.

And this is coming from the great-grandson of a Union soldier.

I don't know though. Canadians are damn tough soldiers. Did you notice how well the frogs did in 1870 and 1940? Could be a lot easier than you think.
