Report: ESPN.com To Drop Yahoo As Provider Of Text Ads

Barron's, September 7, 2006, 2:26 pm

Adweek is reporting that Disney’s (DIS) ESPN.com has decided to drop Yahoo (YHOO) as a provider of text ads to the high-traffic site.

In a press release today, a company called Quigo announced that ESPN will launch its own ad auction platform using Quigo’s AdSonar platform.

As SearchEngineWatch notes today, ESPN gives up about 20% of its ad dollars to Yahoo under the current system.

I doubt this is going to matter much to Yahoo by itself, but if the go-it-alone approach became a trend, it might be a problem for Yahoo and its rivals in the advertising platform business, Google and Microsoft.
