The MCI anology used earlier is not a good one. MCI was first and formost a marketing company and was very aggressive in advertising and very competitive with one competitor AT&T. PSINet, UUNET, BBN et.al. are lackluster marketers and need to learn how to keep their name in the public. In any given market the local little ISP has more advertising presence than these guys. Of course, that requires faith, great advertising, and capital to committ to the media.
