New for Sony in 1998 , In-Home Networks are a Major Goal. But, they don't mention who is going to make this "Almighty Receiver" !!!??? For those who don't know, IEEE-1394 is Apple's FireWire.
Central to the in-home network will be a set-top box, labeled "Almighty Receiver" in a Sony blueprint. The set-top will include software that can process, separarte and distribute the different kinds of digital content to various devices through i-Link (IEEE-1394) broadband digital pathways.
Using the set-top box, users will be able to "download" new content and services, such as music, classified ads, extra information about news and sports, and entertainment. The "set-top" gateway will also source video and data from local libraries, such as A/V hard-disk drives, DVD juke boxes, MiniDiscs and material stored in home PCs.
In short, Sony said it defines "convergence" as "the fusion of commercial broadcasts with interactive home network systems."
...the end result will be about restoring industry profitability by developing new revenue streams as much as enhancing consumer lifestyles.
