elma. DSL's is not my area of expertese, but the US wireline operators simply have not sold them. Wireline carriers in the us are just slow. However, and correct me if I am wrong, I seem to recall that DSL data rates fall off sharply a few miles from the main switch -- and that is not good at all in the US because populations are disbursed into the suburbs in the US rather than being centered around the train station as they are in Europe. Further, the equipment to bond a phone and data line together for DSL is somewhat complicated inside the home and beyond what the average American family wants to accept. Further, this country is largly wired for cable and thus a simple cable modem installed over existing coax is easy. Further, the internet operators here have, at least in the past, charged extra fees to DSL users.

Personally, I use a cable modem. It is fast enough, cheap ($29.95/mo), with an inexpensive hub supports several puters, and simple. KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid)
