Many came to the US to escape repressive European church states. Europe had a terrible historic record of letting its government be run by the Vatican and other churches. Remember the Grand Inquisition? That's the most famous heinous example of what happens when a church has too much power inside a state.

State religions need to be outlawed in this country permanently. Every time you have a state religion you have a recipe for trouble, except Buddhism which seems to be of a pacifist nature.
Just look at the Shia-Sunni mess. Why are Baptists and Pentacostals any different? They're all frequently wackos.

Bottomline, the religious right needs to be kept the hell out of our government. They have a very poor record on ethics, tolerance and rational thinking. In fact many of them are downright immoral.
