I rather liked the priest in "Contact". He was a mensch, and no coward intellectually.
Father Mulcahy in "MASH" was also pretty cool.
I'm actually having a hard time thinking of a religious villain, but then again I don't see a lotta movies.
I've not noticed a medisa bias toward portraying religious folk as somehow lacking. But I've not been paying close attention. My "hot button" is whenever the news speaks of some violent episode and what is their symbol? a handgun. Subtle mesage here, or what?

When I was a college student, I spent a coupla years heavily involved with a church. Many of my memories are unpleasant, and the unifying theme of that unpleasantness was a sort of intolerance: toward Wrong Ideas, Wrong Conduct or Wrong Speech. I found the rules to be quite confining, and they ended up getting irreconcilably into the way of my search for God. (God's gotta be Bigger than all taht.) So now I place a special value on pluralism and inclusiveness, both of faith and of ideas. This is of course my personal issue/journey.

Leaves me with a dilemma on how to instruct my young'uns in the elements of ethics. "Why, Daddy?" Good question, young student.
