Bush Nominees Deserve Respect, Not Retaliation

Blogs for Bush

Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said, "I don't think it's radical to ask senators to vote. I don't think it's radical to expect senators to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities." True enough—I just wonder why some Republicans are wary about voting to ban judicial filibusters.

On the other hand, it appears the Democrats—possible in response to polling that suggests Americans believe that judicial nominees deserve to be voted on—are weakening a bit on this issue:

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., raised the possibility of a deal. "I think we should compromise and say to them that ... we'll let a number" of the seven judges "go through, the two most extreme not go through and put off this vote and compromise," he said on ABC's "This Week."
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is open to compromise, his spokesman said Sunday. "There's lot of concern about the road Senator Frist is leading the Senate down," Jim Manley said.

Willing to compromise? This is news to me. If Democrats are suddenly saying they will compromise, they are clearly softening their previous position. That being the case, I believe the Republicans ought to force the Democrats to filibuster and see if they are really willing to go through with it. They might not be willing to risk it. If they're not, we get our judges, if they are, we'll enjoy winning more seats in the Senate in 2006.
