Native Americans sue to halt Calif solar projects

By The Associated Press,

Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 10:47 a.m.

SAN DIEGO — A Native American group has sued the federal government over the expedited approval of six solar projects in Southern California.

The La Cuna de Aztlan Sacred Site Protection Circle and five individuals say the process violates laws protecting burial grounds and cultural resources.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported late Wednesday that the cultural protection group wants to yank approvals for projects in San Bernardino, Riverside and Imperial counties.

A spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management says the agency is reviewing the lawsuit.

BrightSource Energy Co. started work on one of the projects in October. The newspaper reports company officials could not be reached.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in San Diego this week.
