Yes, typically the Skipper is relieved, found responsible in some manner, and sent to a dead-end shore duty assignment to await retirement. Not sure if that will happen in this case though. Depends on what the investigation turns up.

An interesting side bar to the story is the fact that about 8 years ago, the submarine force got rid of the QM rate which specialized in conventional navigation and merged three rates into the ET rate in order to save money. Movies and television make things like navigating around the world look simple. The truth is, it takes allot of hard work, dedicated training, and quality navigation systems to make it happen flawlessly. Another thing people don't appreciate is the high turnover which happens routinely in the service. It's all new to the new generation of kids coming out of high-school, and it's a real challenge to maintain the same level of proficiency and expertise.
