You raise an interesting point. The web hosting service could be a valuable learning experience for Intel, and be the eyes and ears for the Itanium family by providing first hand experience of the server business. I think that Intel will shy away from becoming a server vendor itself. Gordon Moore described Intel as a Chip Manufacturer, the system business just providing the packing crates for Intel Silicon. Thus becoming a server vendor might put sales of Itanium Silicon in peril, by poisoning the relationship with server vendors.Thus Intel may elect to pass up that opportunity for selling servers directly to end users.
