Sun has NetDynamics and Netscape's Kiva (not sure if Sun-Netscape alliance put this software in Sun's shop) that are a competition to BEA's WebLogic Server - which is only the Web Applicaiton Server part of the total middleware solution.

Sun does not have anything else, remotely close to BEA's M3/TUXEDO (currently bundled with BEA WebLogic Enterprise Server), EAI products and Theory Center type components.

In all respects, the only company which has 1-to-1 product match, is IBM. IBM has been successful in pushing their products at companies where they sell their services (IBM Global Services) or their server machines (RS6000).

But I haven't seen any customers that chose just IBM middleware software. Which is almost 60-70% of non-mainframe market. BEA's penetration is very high in this segment.

The competition right now is mostly from the smaller players, who make big claims with their unproven products. These implementations lead to systems that cannot scale reliably.
