I don't think it did get a lot of play among the apolitical or even from most Democrats and/or liberals.

Republicans paid more attention to it, and now Trump supporters are. Similar to how Trump's "skittles" mostly got play among those who oppose Trump.

Not that I'm a big fan of either Trump (I'd probably prefer any of the other people who tried to get the Republican nomination, or Gary Johnson) or his tweet, just pointing out that he's hardly the first to make this type of analogy. Yes with the m&ms thing it was the other side paying more attention to it. It almost always is when something like this happens. Most highly political people want to paint the other side in as bad of light as possible,
