INTERVIEW-Brazil to save key fiscal votes to last

Reuters, Thursday, November 12, 1998 at 19:52

By William Schomberg
BRASILIA, Nov 12 (Reuters) - The Brazilian government is
making headway with its anti-crisis austerity plan in Congress
but the most controversial measures have yet to be voted, a
senior government lawmaker said Thursday.
"From what we have seen so far, things are going well,"
Deputy Arnaldo Madeira, the government's chief whip in the
lower house, told Reuters.
The government secured approval from both houses of
Congress late Wednesday for four of a total 12 presidential
decrees included in the austerity plan.
