Sun's PersonalJava Environment Selected By TCI as the Standard Programming Environment for Advanced Set-Top Devices
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1998--Today at the National Cable TV Association (NCTA) Conference, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) and Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) announced that TCI's National Digital Television Center (NDTC) has expanded its earlier agreement with Sun to specify Sun's PersonalJava(TM) environment as a standard programming language on all of its advanced digital set-top devices.
As part of this new agreement, Sun will now provide a software port of the PersonalJava environment for those devices on which Microsoft's WinCE operating system will be utilized. Under the agreement, TCI also obtained the option to license Sun's JavaOS(TM) for Consumers(TM) operating system. In addition, TCI will support Sun's JavaTV Application Programming Interface (API). The combination of the PersonalJava environment, JavaOS for Consumers operating system and the JavaTV API will provide a rich application and content development environment for developers.
"Every WinCE set-top and any device TCI intends to ship with the JavaOS for Consumers operating system will be running the PersonalJava environment. This is a colossal win for consumers and the Java(TM) platform," said Scott McNealy, chairman, CEO and president of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "The security, portability and scalability of the Java technology environment brings unique value to the marketplace. And with the leadership of market makers like TCI with General Instrument, Motorola, Scientific Atlanta and Sony, it is quickly becoming the highest volume content and application environment in the world."
"With Sun's PersonalJava software, TCI will be able to deploy multiple world-class operating systems in millions of advanced digital devices, beginning in 1999, while maintaining a universal API for most content and applications," said Dr. John C. Malone, chairman and CEO of TCI. "Use of the PersonalJava software is a major step forward in the realization of the OpenCable API guidelines for operating system and processor independence."
The Java technology environment is being embraced by the industry's highest volume access, communications and information platforms including smart cards, smart phones, personal computers and now set-top devices. Java technology is being adopted in part to enable corporations to extend their business processes such as order entry, financial transactions and customer care to the extranet, providing customers with a variety of services over the network. Additionally, the Java technology security model allows cable service providers to control how applications downloaded into a customer's set top box will function. Rather than allowing any Internet applet to download and run, the service providers can ensure that only applets which they have digitally signed with a secure certificate can run. -0- Tele-Communications, Inc. is traded through the TCI Group, the TCI Ventures Group, and the Liberty Media Group common stocks. The Series A and Series B TCI Ventures Group common stocks are traded on the National Market tier of the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbols of TCIVA and TCIVB, respectively.
