WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Sheila Bair called the bank industry results for the second quarter "pretty dismal."

Banks earned just $5.0 billion in the second quarter, the second lowest level since the end of 1991, the FDIC said Tuesday.
The FDIC's "problem list" of institutions at the end of June grew to 117 from 90 at the end of March.
