Once every device can have a cellular chip in it, why would we need an extra gadget to carry around?

The popularity of MiFi devices is going to be largely dependent on the operators. If they continue with their attempts to charge individual subscriptions for each device owned by a consumer/family then MiFi units will become ubiquitous. It simply makes no sense for me to buy a 3G enabled iPad if I am going to have to pay another $30 a month fee for my iPhone and even more to connect my laptop.

A single subscription covering all of my devices and charging me by usage would make MiFi devices obsolete.

"Right now it's a matter of costs. Wi-Fi chips are cheap."

Once the price of cell chips comes down, he says connected machines will become more ubiquitous

The cost of the chip is only one component of the premium. You also have to add in the royalty. Whether the royalty is significant will depend on the device.
