(They - AIG - are *also* suing the United States over a couple of hundred million in back taxes that the IRS claims they owe....)

Similar to the Enron episode, much of the AIG/IRS tax argument centers over 'SPEs' --- special purpose entities, mostly structured in tax havens as ways to try to avoid paying Uncle Sam's taxes.

(As far as the Countrywide [now BAC, right?] vs. AIG case, there I believe that AIG has a pretty good case. Quite a large number of the Countrywide mortgages were issued and then resold fraudulently me thinks.)
