That's really stretching it for a malware attack. So, you not only create malware that modifies the firmware for any network device that uses LEDs and make it intercept data, code it and flash the LEDs to transmit in a pattern, you also have to get a camera or sensor of some kind into the same room where the device exists to capture the flashing lights for decoding? That's some NSA level spy stuff right there.

Seems more like some security researchers with too much time on their hands trying to come up with ways to justify their jobs. :-)
