Frist: No Deal

In Bush Nominees
Blogs for Bush

Good news! Bill Frist "isn't interested in any deal that fails to ensure Senate confirmation for all of President Bush's judicial nominees."

<<<

But Frist, in a rare news conference conducted on the Senate floor, said he would not accept any deal that keeps his Republican majority from confirming judicial nominees that have been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"Are we going to step back from that principle? The answer to that is no," Frist said.

This is great news. Republicans have the votes to ban judicial filibuster, and the Democrats are losing their battle of obstruction.

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Karl Rove also says that Bolton will be confirmed and that all judges deserve a vote.

<<<

WASHINGTON — Karl Rove rejected a compromise with Senate Democrats Monday on long-stalled nominations for the federal judiciary and strongly defended President Bush's choice of John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations.

Aside from a few jellyfish, seems like the whole GOP team is getting on the same page.

UPDATE: Kos thinks Reid "outmanuevered" Frist... he's got to be kidding. Let's look at the facts: Democrats claim Bush's nominees are to extreme, so they block them. Then the Republicans have the votes to ban judicial filibusters. Then all of a sudden, some of the nominees are "acceptable" to the Democrats, and they want to "compromise."

Kos tells his ilk that had Frist accepted the compromise, "Bush would've gotten the majority of his judges through, and Democrats would've gotten -- who knows what. All published compromise offers didn't seem to give our side anything."

Kos is clearly delusional. Reid's compromise was for only two judges in exchange for no vote to ban judicial filibusters. This left the doors wide open for the Democrats to continue blocking Bush's nominees... with their number one target being a potential Supreme Court nominee. So contrary to Kos's claim, Reid's compromise would have given Bush a fraction of his judges, while the Democrats lost nothing.

Yes, Kos is a partisan, and he has to find some way to spin this story to his liking... But a simple look at the facts makes it clear that the Democrats are likely to be forced into shutting down the Senate, which will destroy them in 2006, or they'll have to let Bush's nominees get their up-or-down vote—otherwise judicial filibusters will be banned.

Kos must know the Democrats have been outfoxed on this one.
