<<how invariant *** Moore's Law is>> "Payne's Law" / Law of the Photon, may be a more pertinent focus when discussing fiberspace.
(nodding respectfully to George Gilder)
Mr. Gilder's participation here is a great thrill to me as well.
The cover story in the current (10/6) issue of Forbes focuses upon the Law of the Photon, that "bandwidth triples every year," and suggests that it be named after David Payne, a 53-year old physicist at Britain's University of Southampton. The article discusses his work in two key inventions, the optical fiber amplifier, and an enhancement to the amplifier that corrects for distortions in light pulses. Combined with Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM), these developments should allow photonics to develop at an even faster pace than computer processing power, according to the articles.
By the way, the article includes a sidebar indicating that Payne's lab is having its funding cut by the U.K. government, and he's forming a new outfit, Southampton Photonics. All he wants is $10 million a year budget for R&D. As the headline says: "Buy this lab." Sounds like good advice.
Thoughts, anyone?
