PC magazine said PC demand since Thanksgiving has been so strong they don't envision any price cuts. They did admit that Packard Bell might cut prices to move it's machines (they are already using rebate coupons), but as you say, no matter what happens Intel wins. PC magazine quoted one sales analysis company predicting a 25% increase in sales of PC's over last year. I'm beginning to think this Packard situation (as far as the effect on Intel) has been way overdone.
