Phil,

whether it's an option or the actual shares. Ultimately
there are shares underlying the options. If the option
expires worthless, nothing happens. Otherwise, they
have to be covered one way or the other. And that was
the gist of "short squeeze". Everything else, is mathematics
invented by the PhDs. to sell more gambling instruments
to the Proctor and Gambles of the world.
