It doesn't, you just pay a little more at the pump.

you are obviously far better educated on ethanol than I am. And this is why I refuse to argue on the gory details of ethanol.

I'll stick to the simple argument. Are you asserting that ethanol doesn't get special treatment from our government? Do corn growers get a tax benefit for growing corn for ethanol? Do they get any direct payments from the government? Is ethanol mandated by the government as an additive to gasoline?

If you are saying that the federal government isn't subsidizing the ethanol industry, I have to wonder why there is a page on the senate.gov site referencing a CBO report that says:

“According to the Congressional Research Service, the VEETC will cost the American taxpayer $7.6 billion this year alone. That high price tag makes the VEETC by far our Tax Code’s largest subsidy for renewable energy. And this annual price tag comes on top of the $41.2 billion in current dollars that U.S. taxpayers have already spent since 1980 on tax-based subsidies for ethanol.

And as far as "you just pay a little more at the pump", 0.45 per gallon is not a "little" in my book. (the same senate.gov link gave me that number too.
