<<Lucent can not use stock to purchase until Oct. '98.>> This keeps getting twisted on several threads (the LU buyout rumor threads). As someone posted earlier, the LU restriction is only for the pooling of interests method. They can use cash and/or stock now but goodwill and tax considerations apply. The Oct. '98 date is correct - 2 years from their spinoff from AT&T. This October they will be getting an undisclosed (I think) amount of cash from their sale of a division of theirs to General Dynamics(?), I believe. This will enhance their war chest.
