Jerry,
The other way to avoid a tax consequence would be to exercise your contract and take the stock instead of selling the option. If the stock rises exponentially your exercise could be offset by the then current value of the stock and margin would allow the purchase, this assumes of course that you haven't lost all of your other trading capital on stupid ass stocks in the semi equipment sector. I also assume that you have gone out longer than 1 month on a roll over but not as long as a '00 LEAP.
