"A cautionary note: the release says ATML benefitted from a pre-tax gain from asset sales of $14.9 million. The way I'm reading the income statement, that amount is included in the operating numbers, though it should be treated as a non-recurring gain. This would reduce income from recurring operations well below the estimate.
I'm long, but I don't like the smell of this. Any thoughts? "

Steven,
I would like to commend you for being the first one to spot this yesterday. Upon reading your post, I looked more closely at the report also. It boggled the mind how a small $1,356,000 increase in total qtr. to qtr. revenue could translate into a 70% increase in EPS. There had to be something to it and now the conference call has confirmed it. Operating earnings for the qtr. are actually LOWER than last qtr.. All this talk of blowout numbers and going to th 40's was a kind of euphoria and clouded what was written (though not clearly) on the report. I find it hard to believe that some people become so enraged when they are not told exactly what they want to hear and you are just offering the kind of non emotional insight that is required to be a successful trader. It was stated that we were "nitpicking" over details. I do not think that a missing the street estimates by 20% verses blowing them out by 70% is nitpicking. I am not saying that the future is bad for ATML by any means. It sound like all the pieces are in place for a successful turnaround. But I will say that the report had enough info. on it to justify raising the concerns of any astute investor as to a potential shortfall for the previous qtr.. Even the analyst are split on this one. Some are miffed by the shortfall and some (BT Alex Brown) are encouraged by the future. Keep up the good post. Threads always become heated when people are losing money. But there is no better way to learn.

regards,
OZ
