I think the 88 is the same as the 37 class in that the whole front damage that your looking at is fiberglass cover for the sonar dome. I would guess the green area is the start of the pressure hull. Obviously the ballast tank on the port side there is wounded also. In fact the front area being something that can crush versus rigid like the pressure hull is probably why there weren't more deaths.
