Feb. 8 — He's a cult figure on the Internet, the patron saint of anti-Microsoft forces in the computing world. Hundreds of Web pages sing his praises (AltaVista says over 19,000 mention his name). Software he created is discussed nearly every day in a Washington, D.C., courtroom, where Microsoft argues that the existence of Linux proves there is no operating system monopoly. Far from basking in the spoils of his star status, Linus Torvalds toils every day, like any Silicon Valley code-crunching geek. Need proof?

Public perception still pegs Linux as a complicated plaything for geeks, not as an office-wide solution for serious business applications. But there are companies turning their shops and their desktops over to Linux.
“What the Linux community needs most is for those stories to be told,” said William Peterson, research manager at International Data Corp.
And when those stories are told, the Legend of Linus is sure to grow even larger. |
