Two important books for me are:

The Evolution of consciousness and The Axe Maker's gift. by Robert Ornstein and James Burke.

The latter book is the most important book I have ever read.

"The Axe Maker's Gift" is a chronology of the evolution of the human species going back 4 million years and coming forward to modern day, examining how tools, settling down, discovering math and inventing an alphabet shaped humans along the way.
