Cabletron at fresh low after DEC announcement

NEW YORK, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Cabletron Systems Inc (NYSE:CS - news)
shares slipped to a low unseen since the summer of 1995
after the
company's announcement Tuesday of a networking partnership with
Digital Equipment Corp (NYSE:DEC - news), traders said.

In early New York Stock Exchange trade, Cabletron shares were off 1/4
to 24-1/2, a level last notched in August 1995, while DEC fell 7/16
to 49-3/8.

As part of the agreement, Cabletron will acquire DEC's computer
network product business for about $430 million in cash, stock and
product credits.

Citing the deal, J.P. Morgan downgraded Cabletron to market performer from buy.

"We believe that DEC's (networking) business is a deteriotating one
and that it lessens the possibility for upside surprises over the
next four quarters. Management's ability to improve the company's
short-term growth rates were our primary reasons for having a buy
recommendation on shares of Cabletron and we now believe that the
DEC acquisition may hinder short-term plans," according to the J.P. Morgan research.
