the proportion of African American males ages 15 - 35 that kill each other is far higher than any other racial/ethnic group I read a fascinating report recently - I think it may have been from the NYT - which partially explained this, and also the falling overall murder rate... Briefly, the murder attempts are not themselves falling nearly so much. However the death rate is declining because the hugely improved emergency services and process now save many more lives - people who would have died 10-30 years ago are now surviving, and hence do not add to the murder statistics. However, certain areas - typically poor inner-city - have far worse hospital coverage (no tax dollars coming in, no strong lobby groups, insurance companies not interested obvious problems staffing etc): so more people who are assaulted here will die from their wounds. Young urban blacks in particular are prone to this, living where there are less likely to be emergency services either called rapidly or close by to respond. And of course they have a culture in which violence gains respect. How very unlike nations, and how unfortunate it woud be if this were not so, and the biggest strongest country were free to mug whoever it liked...
