There is an interesting piece in the latest Scientific American about hybrid cars. Major points:

1. There are viable hybrid cars on the market now, but they can't find a market, because they don't match the performance/cost of conventional cars.
2. Hybrids which will match conventional vehicles, and stringent emissions standards, will be available in 2004. These will require advances in materials science and battery technology.

The author's only comment on fuel cells is to the effect that hybrid technology is closer to market.

Here's a thought for discussion: Just because DB has to sell 250,000 fuel cell cars to make a profit doesn't mean BLD won't be profitable until DB is. $1,000 profit on 100,000 fuel cells is $100 mil.
