I remain unconvinced that a typical draft is useful or economical.
1. I doubt that the US will engage in any major military ground activities other than the present for a few years.
2. The use of US troops in Iraq should have nearly peaked by now as the Iraqi government forces gain power against the insurgents.
3. We could use more experienced guards and police at this time. A functioning UN could have helped there.

Draftng trained police and security guards should fill the gap but would be considered descriminatory and would weaken
Homeland security. Not acceptable politically or practically.

So we need a fair and balanced draft of who?. Single people , male or female. ( welcome to the fray , girls of 18).
Do we draft only 100,000 out of 10mm who may qualify, or 1 out of 100?
Deferments for highly valued college students?

And with the amount of free speech and griping permitted today there will be many demonstrations.

Keep looking for alternate solutions. Perhaps the needed manpower could be hired into Homeland Security as non-combat troops ( that is, defensive types) with temporary assignment to Security duties in Iraq which would provide experience in dealing with terrorism here when they rotate home to permanent positions.
