I watch it for Spacey and Davis. I get absolutely engrossed in their performances. I think they may have given the performances of their lives in that film. I know everyone talks about Spacey in American Beauty- an excellent film, but he is magical in The Ref. I find Leary perfectly suited, but only because he is exactly the flat character needed for the movie, just as the mother is perfect, and the whiney sister in law, etc. The dynamism of Spacey and Davis are what get me about the film. In that respect I guess it's a lot like the Truman Show where, again, you have a cast of superb flat characters (Christof, the wife, the mother, the friend), but it is the dynamic character of Truman who one watches and thinks about.
