More on the INTC threat to enter consumer electronics chip markets:

---

Message 3410594

(Intel is running dead last.)

"I don't have high hopes we will get that business."

Intel, adds a TCI executive, "has a product philosophy that just doesn't work for the consumer market."

Intel may come out with a high-performance set-top box by mid-1999 that would cost about $500, compared with the $300 target price sought by TCI.

"... place more of the functions of a machine on a single chip is igniting a boom in consumer electronics."

"Information appliances," which will cost even less, will come next, continuing to challenge the low-end of Intel's PC business.

The Hitachi chip is geared to run Windows CE, is considered a front-runner in the TCI competition [bummer]

Intel certainly has the resources to ride the StrongARM into the consumer-electronics market. And Intel probably still has time, even though its rivals currently have a big advantage by being first to the market.

(they too noticed the Digital perk! Still it's not only the MPU that INTC needs. If INTC's serious they should do what CSCO does and buy whatever fledgling companies they need. Fastest way to play the game. Look at NSM. That's what they're doing.)
