Let's look at the more interesting issues, however, like benchmarks. Below I've compiled a table of AMD's published results:

Benchmark 1000 MHz Athlon 900 MHz Athlon 800 MHz Athlon 800 MHz Pentium III
SYSmark98 354.0 331.0 311.7 306.0
3DMark 99 MAX 8702.7 8352.7 8244.3 7624.3
FPU WinMark 5440.0 4910.0 4360.0 4233.3
Half-Life Smokin' 46.3 42.3 40.1 39.0
Quake II Crusher 126.2 120.2 113.7 99.8
ViewPerf 6.1.1 AWADVS-03 88.89 88.89 87.17 71.11
PhotoShop 5.0 53.2s 58.2s 64.8s 79.0s
Winstone 2000 Content Creation 38.6 36.5 35.1 33.6
SPECfp_base95 29.4 27.5 26.6 19.8

Though we have yet to test an aircooled model, we did review a 1 GHz Athlon Kryotech system earlier. One major consideration has been the L2 cache speed on these new high frequency CPUs....it's very likely that Athlon cores with full-speed cache (like Spitfire and Thunderbird) will offer significant performance improvements. We also have some cache performance benchmarks examining performance differences with a 1 GHz CPU (overclocked) using 1/3 and 2/5 clock dividers.

So, are you ready to buy one? Thanks to Tom for mentioning that Gateway has wasted no time putting up word of their 1 GHz Athlon based Gateway Select 1000. For a little over $3000 it seems you can get a 1 GHz system with 128 MB of RAM, a 19" monitor, 32MB GeForce graphics, a 30GB hard disk, and more.
