Not in OUR universe. The regressive nature of the tax structure of the U.S. in notorious and it's only getting worse, not better. There is a flow away from the average person and the table is tilting, tilting, tilting, toward Texas... Some people, like many of my colleagues have benefited. BUT, there is a much larger number of people whose pies have gotten DRASTICALLY smaller.

Just like Tea Pot Dome didn't destroy the country, we'll probably survive this episode of rather embarrassing profiteering and general disrespect for the general welfare of the common people (of many lands!) It might take a while to live it down, though.
