Mike - Here is Digital's response to why their UNIX product is better than Sun's Solaris. Any idea as to what Sun's upgrade path is for customers that plan to utilize the Intel Merced processor and need scalability? Will they have to eventually upgrade to a SPARC processor?

Since the Intel Merced chip isn't out and I haven't been following the design specs. I have no idea how it will perform and what configurations they will design for it so I can't give you MHO.

I'm not sure if this has been posted since this thread is getting out of control with all the scrapping going on. I've been skipping any post with a twi*t** on it.

Unix: The Next Generation
techweb.com
The $20 billion Unix market is surging with activity as vendors position themselves for the arrival of Intel's forthcoming 64-bit processors. The potential benefits include improved scalability, lower prices through fiercer competition and standardized hardware, and an easier-to-use interface designed to take on Windows NT.

Among the longer-term projects, sources say, is a highly sensitive IBM-Sun Microsystems initiative to develop a next-generation Unix that is tightly integrated with Java.

Unix is a large, growing, and profitable market."

I would guess that Digital,HP and a wanna be MS will lose market share for enterprise systems if this is true. IBM-Sun Microsystems initiative to develop a next-generation Unix
