IDG'S CIO Communications Paves the Way for Tomorrow's Information Technology Leaders
CIO Magazine Honors IT Leaders by Establishing Million Dollar Scholarship Fund
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- CIO Communications, Inc. today announced details of a scholarship fund designed to help meet today's educational needs for tomorrow's IT leaders.
The $1,000,000 fund will be distributed throughout the next several years in the form of separate grants or scholarships. CIO will award a select group of IT leaders with a $10,000 endowment in their name to the educational institution of their choice. ''This fund is designed to recognize the contributions of today's notable IT leaders while building on the promise of a new generation of IT visionaries,'' stated Joe Levy, President and Group Publisher of CIO Communications, Inc.
The first set of leaders/honorees was established in conjunction with an editorial feature honoring thirteen of today's top IT pioneers. The story, which appeared in the ten year anniversary issue of CIO magazine (Sept. 15, 1997), dubbed these thirteen influential individuals the ''Leaders of the Information Age.''
The CIO Communications Editorial and Executive Board, including editorial director Lew McCreary, editor in chief Abbie Lundberg and Levy, selected the founding thirteen companies and the individuals who lead them. According to Levy, ''These first thirteen executives have set the parameters and the possibilities of the information age for the past decade and will likely continue to do so for the decade ahead. In short, the information industry would not be where it is today without these individuals and their organizations. We at CIO are eager to add to this distinguished list in the years to come by honoring new IT leaders with grants and scholarships in their names.'' CIO will honor the founding leaders, and newly designated leaders, each year for as long as the fund is in existence.
The thirteen original IT leaders and their companies are: Lester M. Alberthal, chairman & CEO, Electronic Data Systems Corp.; James Barksdale, president & CEO, Netscape Communications Corp.; Eric A. Benhamou, chairman, president & CEO, 3Com Corp.; John T. Chambers, president & CEO, Cisco Systems Inc.; Michael S. Dell, founder, chairman & CEO, Dell Computer Corp.; David A. Duffield, chairman, president & CEO, PeopleSoft Inc.; Lawrence J. Ellison, chairman & CEO, Oracle Corp.; William H. Gates, chairman & CEO, Microsoft Corp.; Louis V. Gerstner Jr., chairman & CEO, IBM Corp.; Andrew S. Grove, chairman & CEO, Intel Corp.; Scott McNealy, chairman, president & CEO, Sun Microsystems, Inc.; Eckhard Pfeiffer, president & CEO, Compaq Computer Corp.; Charles B. Wang, chairman & CEO, Computer Associates International Inc.
Computer Associates International selected the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences of the State University of New York at Stony Brook as its recipient. PeopleSoft Inc. selected the San Francisco Unified School District as its recipient. On October 27th, Intel Corp. will award the fund's third grant to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
