Going after Pirelli (which I can safely say has a different culture and geography than Cisco...<g> and is a direct competitor to Ciena in the "commodity" DWDM product line,) Monterey, and so forth... I see the rumor in a different light than most-I don't see it as actually having any substance but see it as a result of some students of the optical space seeing Cisco's moves as being somewhat behind in execution (Monterey product especially comes to mind...) and just extrapolating from there....
