Why indeed. That is the question, now isn't it?

Not that there wasn't anything on the laptop. There was. But at the time of the infamous letter, Comey didn't have any idea what it meant. That is, assuming the FBI didn't lie about it. They didn't even have a warrant to look at the information at the time of the letter. Granted, they could have been reading them the whole time, despite not having authorization to do it. But we don't know that.

What we do know is that Comey seems to have lost control over his own department. At least the NYC office has been leaking like a sieve. And leaking information for the purpose of influencing the election. And that is in direct violation of department rules. Not to mention DOJ rules. It has been suggested that Comey's letter was a direct result of him trying to head off it being otherwise leaked. I suppose it can be argued he was trying to get control of the situation. If so, he failed. And badly damaged his reputation as being non-partisan. Even more so than his stunt in July.

It has been rumored that Republicans in Congress were pressuring Comey to write the letter. Wouldn't at all be surprised if this was the case. Congressional Republicans have put a lot of effort into damaging Hillary. Even bragged about it. So this would not be an unexpected development.

Which is not to say the letter wasn't the result of both of these and likely other factors.

Regardless, his letter was the result of partisan reasons that had no basis in the facts of the case. And in direct contravention of rules and procedure. Directly or indirectly, it is clear the intent was to interfere with the election. I realize you don't have the foresight to realize exactly how dangerous this is to our system. Likely you don't care, the ends justifying the means and all.
