Dave, I think there's one more disadvantage to CD-RW. I believe when you write new data on previously used tracks, the drive has to first erase the old data. This will cause the write performance to seem quite slow. Magnetic drives just write directly over the old data without using an erase-first step. Of course, an erase head could be included on the CD-RW head so that the erase might be done immediately before the write, but I would think that that would increase the cost. Does anyone actually know how CD-RW is accomplished?
