David--

Good one. Some years ago I was flying from Dallas to Philadelphia. Well, actually from Austin to Dallas to Philly. Spent about three years waiting for the connection for reasons the ground staff were unwilling to divulge: tried to tell me there was a problem with food services.

So finally we boarded, and the Jolly Captain told us that in fact there'd been mechanical problems, "but we hope we've got those solved now". Fortunately that was the case.

But of course we were hours late. As we approached the East Coast well after dark, the JC announced over the intercom in the annoying way they have: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you'll look out the left side of the aircraft you'll see the lights of Our Nation's Capital, Washington, D.C.". Needless to say, nobody bothered.

About thirty seconds later, he came back on: "Oh, sorry, ladies and gentlemen, actually that was Baltimore".
