Playing cards is considered a sin by some, even if you're not gambling.

There were a lot of people who wouldn't play cards when I was a kid. Enough that there was always a courtesy question before bringing out the cards. Sort of like asking "do you mind if I smoke" before lighting up. Enough that when I was little I always felt a bit like I was doing something wrong when I played cards. I was probably in high school before the little voice went away.

I haven't seen that since. I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it.
