Yes, very correct and the official religion of the Japanese Emperor was and remains Shinto, where most Japanese are Buddhists, except for the few Christians.
The Shinto gods, quite different from our "God" -written with a capital "G" - and in the content in whom the Germans, the Russians, the British - and the Russians believed and who would no doubt thus grant them (all) the victory, the Christian "God", belong to a different deity world.
Good you did your home-work and learned a few things :)
As said, the Japanese - except for the Tenno - are Buddhists, but at the same time, being quite practical, besides having the compulsory Buddhist home altar, they also hedge their bets by having an additional Shinto Shrine at home. Not to mention, that they also on top of that, often marry according to Christian traditions!
