One rosey hypothesis for what Datek is doing is that they are serving their customers very well, towit:

They were forced to return borrowed shares to the lender broker, they gave 48 hour notice to holders of sufficient number of shares, then they worked hard to find replacement shares so that the forced buy-in would not be necessary, and they found them.

I'm pretty sure Schwab would not do this unless bugged to death by customers.

This is only a hypothesis.
