>>>What I don't really understand is why you constantly feel a need to challenge intellectual authority ...<<<

I feel the need to challenge all authority. Authority is based in power which tends toward corruption. Scholars are especially suspect in that they rely on support of the masses and having done so are reticent to recognize their own flaws. I have met scholars who have corrupt character. Surely you'd have no problem challenging religious authority, and authority in government where it contradicts your views. You should be equally suspect for those who claim to represent you because they have the potential to cause the most harm to you.

I challenge the intellectual authority of historians because their statements are constantly proven false or full of bias. In this case, we see the presence of wide spread democracy and commerce engaged in by the multitudes across vast regions of ancient India. We know it didn't just spring up when Alexander arrived, so there is good reason to consider the possibility that it had been around for a while. In any event, I wasn't challenging what is known about the Greeks, I was challenging your notion that people were unwise and intellectually void unless they had the benefit of a Greek foundation.

>>>and science?<<<

I am grateful for the scientific advances we all enjoy. I do not worship science and do not consider it to be a conclusive field. It is an exploratory field. Everyone should challenge empirical endings because that is where break throughs come from. I also recognize other avenues to enlightened knowledge, which doesn't hinder my respect for science.
